Chapter 10

Back and forth, back and forth. Matt paced the tiny room, watching as the two units engaged, the map flickering again and again as the two units occupied the same spot. The map did not show the actual battle, just the conflict between the two.

Irvine on the other hand was seated, legs up on the edge of the table, eyes half-closed. Between his fingers was a long glass pipe, which let out a harsh acrid smell as smoke rose from one end. Occasionally, he would draw on the pipe, smile to himself in bliss as the smoke hit him, and then let out a long exhale.

“OSHA would really have issues with that…” Matt grumbled, considering demanding the man stop for the eighth time. Then, he dismissed silly thoughts. He was resolved to deal with Irvine, to tell the Alchemist to stop – or at least, report on his progress.

A flicker in the corner of his eye had him seeing that the unit of woodlings and Braskar’s tiny icon figurine were standing, uncontested, inside the village now. A moment later, the map table flickered again and further information spiraled outwards.

Battle Report (Woodlings vs Militia)

Results: Victory (0 Units Lost, 1 Unit Defeated)

“Huh.” Irvine’s eyes had opened, the man leaning forwards as he stared at the map. Matt frowned, surprised he could read it so well from his spot but then shrugged. Magic. Sometimes it was better to just let it be. “Not much information.”

“But it’s enough, isn’t it?” Matt smiled in relief, sagging a little. He had no idea why his heart was beating double-time or why he felt like he had run a marathon himself. It was not as though he had taken part in the fight, after all.

“We won!” Braskar cried out, startling Matt. Not bothering to wait for a reply, he provided a quick report of the fight itself, ending with, “It looks like you are right. Units without a commander in place are foolish and lack any tactical acumen. However, these battles have seen me increase in experience. I now have sixteen points!”

“Only?” Matt frowned, then nodded suddenly. “Right. Two points per unit, then?”

“It seems so.”

“Before you get lost patting yourself on the back, have you looked at the other notifications?” Irvine cut in.

“Other notifications?” Matt frowned, waving his hand and dismissing the victory notification. Immediately another showed up.

Village #1 (Small) Conquered

Rewards: +1 Gold, +1 territorial overview

Would you like to rename it?

No need to ask what the territorial overview was as the faded bits of the map disappeared and strengthened, with a one hex range extended. On top of that, two hexes were further revealed, allowing Matt to get shadowy glimpses of those other spaces. More plains and forest for now.

“No need to rename it right now,” Matt muttered. Not as though the residents were actual people. So better to move on. Immediately another notification appeared.

New Build Options Available

Road (10/+0.25 Gold/increased movement speed by 50%)

Watch Tower (15/+1 hex view)
